It’s called “the race that stops a nation” for a reason: at 3pm AEDT on Tuesday, offices across Australia put the broadcast up on the big screen – and for people under 40, watching the race is only half the event. The other half is the sweepstakes, the trivia, the protesters against hats, and whoever’s horse comes last.
This page gives you the full event plan – including the part most offices forget until 11:55am: something for the 25 minutes before the 3pm jump.
The pre-race hour is the party. Here’s the game for it:

What is a Melbourne Cup sweepstakes – and why pair it with trivia?
Melbourne Cup 2026: the facts you’ll want on hand
- Race: 3:00pm AEDT, Tuesday 3 November 2026, Flemington Racecourse, Melbourne – 3,200 metres, thoroughbred stayers, 24-horse handicap
- First run: 1861 – it’s one of the oldest horse races in the world
- Public holiday: Melbourne Cup Day is a public holiday in Victoria (and many AU workplaces elsewhere run lengthy lunch breaks)
- Records: Makybe Diva won three straight (2003-05); Phar Lap took it in 1930; Michelle Payne became the first female winning jockey in 2015 aboard Prince of Penzance
Double-check the barrier draws and final field on the official VRC site on Monday – sweepstakes should use the final 24.
The event plan: two options by office size
| Office / club (up to 20) | Company-wide or school (21-2,000) | |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | Standard game, one shared screen + team scoring via Grid style | Crowd Mode – everyone joins on their phone during the lunch session |
| Sweepstakes | Names in a hat with the 24 barrier draws | Assign horses alphabetically by the join list, or run a Wheel-style live draw on screen – the spin replaces the hat |
| Schedule | 2:00 trivia → 2:45 fashion awards → 3:00 race → 3:10 results | 2:00 trivia (short rounds) → 2:50 countdown on screen → race on the big broadcast |
How the run-of-show works technically: each segment is a separate game – TriviaMaker doesn’t merge multiple game styles into one game (Grid, List and Wheel stay distinct). You host them back-to-back in one session, on the same screen, using a new join code per game or re-joining with the same code. Budget ~1 minute per transition while players rejoin.
The run-of-show: what to host before the 3pm jump
Segment 1 – Cup History trivia (2:00-2:20)
Goal: everyone learns something, punters get humbled.
Eight questions, Grid style, three categories on the board:

Think you know the race that stops a nation? Test your knowledge with 12 questions on Cup legends, history, and traditions.
Play This Game Free →- Round 1 · The Race (100-300 pt tier): distance, track, time zone maths for other states (“What time is the Cup in Perth?”)
- The Legends (400-500): Makybe Diva’s three-peat, Phar Lap, the first female winning jockey
- The Day Itself (200-600): the public holiday, the 1861 debut, famous bird-poop-in-the-turf upsets
Ready material today: the How well do you know Australia Grid game already includes a Melbourne Cup category (Michelle Payne, thoroughbreds) – use its Sport column, then clone and extend. A broader warm-up is the Australian Trivia beat-the-place-names round (“Which of these is not a real Australian place?”).
Segment 2 – Survey Says: the Cup edition (2:20-2:40)
Goal: the laughter segment; non-punters always win here.
Cup Day Survey Says
Think you know your co-workers and the Melbourne Cup? Test your luck with this Family Feud-style survey game—perfect for office sweepstakes, BBQs, and race day fun!
Play This Game Free →List style (Family-Feud format) with questions where the “top answers” are hilariously predictable:
- “Name something people wear to the Cup that they’d never wear to work”
- “Name a reason someone’s horse didn’t win” (the barrier, the jockey, the vibes…)
- “Name a thing said at every Cup barbecue” (“Who won?” / “My horse!” / “Another beer?”)
Since survey games need answer data to feel real, either type your own rankings after a Monday Slack poll, or run our office-neutral survey games as templates. Nothing to hand-build: the format guide is here.
Segment 3 – The live Wheel draw (2:40-2:55)
Goal: the sweepstakes become a moment, not an email.

Segment 4 – Race + results (3:00 +)
Switch screens to the broadcast. After the race, reopen the game briefly for the “Fashions on the Field” live-vote and the final trivia-standings reveal (two clicks – the leaderboard is preserved).
